Frederick, Chairman In this week's update:

Chairman's UpdatePrimetime PinocchioLong before there was Barack Obama, the media gave us Democrat Mark Warner. Sure, they may not seem all that similar at first glance – but look again, and you’ll see a kinship between them that made Warner a natural to be chosen by Obama to give the keynote speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver next week. You may recall that it was Obama’s role as the keynote speaker for the 2004 Democrats that launched “Obamania” into the national spotlight. But more than each giving the “honorary” Tuesday night convention speech, their true kinship comes in the form of press treatment that largely ignores the substance of each man in favor of puff coverage focusing on their gregarious personalities and “moderate” political tendencies. And this is exactly what Obama has in mind.Obama is no dummy when it comes to political theatre. He knows that when Mark Warner appears on TVs all across America (those TVs that are not tuned to something more interesting, like the National Spelling Bee contest) the media will laud the former Governor as a moderate bridge builder, or a Democrat who won the hearts and minds of “Red State” Virginia. Warner, they’ll say, is a model for the type of bi-partisan, non-ideological politician that Obama aspires to be, thus marginalizing criticisms of Obama’s liberal positions on the issues. But who are we kidding? We know that you don’t get rated by National Journal as the MOST liberal U.S. Senator for no reason. And in case you forgot: this means that Obama is more liberal than an avowed socialist, Independent (Socialist) Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.Yet this is the man who Mark Warner chooses to honor in the form of giving his keynote address. For years the Democrats in Virginia said they were different from their national counterparts who were on the far left; people like John Kerry, Jesse Jackson, and Barbara Boxer. But the convention in Denver will once and for all dispel any myth to the contrary. The fact is that Mark Warner is the perfect choice to keynote the Democrat convention. As the guest of honor of a far-left gathering, Warner can give a clinic to Obama and the national Democrats on how to campaign as a bi-partisan, non-ideological candidate, but then push through a hard core liberal agenda once elected; he can show the Democrats how to make campaign promise after campaign promise, and then break every one of those major promises and have the media never hold you accountable.Barack Obama and most of the liberals in the room that evening will want to push through record tax increases on America, but Warner has already done it. Obama and the Democrats want to kill offshore drilling for energy independence, but Mark Warner has already vetoed offshore drilling. The Democrats want to push a liberal social agenda without catching heat in return, and as Mark Warner put up his own money to (unsuccessfully) defeat the marriage amendment, he can help here too.Let’s not forget how skilled Mark Warner is at manipulating people. This is the politician that promised he would not raise taxes, and then hid favorable state financial forecasts to push through the largest tax hike in Virginia’s history. Now, imagine – for example – you hid facts from your insurance company to get more money from them as Mark Warner hid facts to get more tax money out of Virginia taxpayers. You wouldn’t get elected to the Senate, you’d go to jail! So, Barack Obama could not have picked a better person to unveil the blueprint of how to fool voters, the press, and even the legislative branch. Mark Warner is the perfect choice. And this is why it is so important we make sure we get all of our family, friends, and co-workers to vote for both John McCain and Jim Gilmore this fall. Our message must be that it makes absolutely no sense to vote for McCain, only to cancel your vote by supporting a Barack Obama clone for the U.S. Senate like Mark Warner. One thing you certainly won’t hear from the media is that Mark Warner may be worth millions, but his word is worth about as much as a $3 bill.Ready to Lead? A Look at the NumbersNumber of years of military service:John McCain: 22Barack Obama: 0Time in Congress:John McCain: 9,490 daysBarack Obama: 147 daysYeah, Obama's ready to be the leader of the free world, right? The other day I was tossing a ball with my 23 month old daughter Gracie. Maybe she’s ready to quarterback the Redskins?Democrat Budget Strategy; Abandon Ship!Just last week Governor Kaine stated that his “most likely focus” between now and Election Day was helping Barack Obama win the election. That may not seem so bad on its face, except for the fact that because of faulty budget forecasts by the Kaine administration, Virginia now faces over $1 billion in budget shortfalls. It is a shame that Governor Kaine did not exert the effort into his duties as Governor that he has traveling the nation on behalf of Obama. Otherwise, we may not be facing such a troubling financial situation. As pointed out in the press recently, both conservative and liberal groups warned Kaine to modify his budget numbers or just such a shortfall would occur. So what do we do now? Well, the answer certainly isn’t to raise taxes, and I was very happy that the Republicans in both chambers of the General Assembly stood together this year to vote against every new Democrat proposal to tax hardworking Virginians more. Further, tax increases have been shown time and time again (a lesson the Democrats either can’t learn, or don’t want to learn) to be counterproductive to solving budget shortfalls and improving the economy. Mark Warner passed record tax increases just a few years ago, yet not only do we still have budget shortfalls, we have failed to adequately address the pressing issue of fixing transportation.I think Delegate Lacey Putney, Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, summed up the urge to tax our way out of budget shortfalls best, saying: “In 2004, then-Governor Warner stated that the tax increase approved by the General Assembly would align our longer term revenue and spending requirements. Clearly, this did not work. The fact that state spending continues to grow faster than revenue growth is not indicative of the need for more revenue, rather the need for spending reform.”So, hard choices have to be made to reign in spending that has grown wildly beyond new revenues. It would be nice if it were a bi-partisan effort to make these choices, but it seems the Democrats did not want to be anywhere near Governor Kaine when he delivered the bad news about his budget numbers. Finance Secretary Jody Wagner conveniently stepped down last Friday, before Monday’s address by the Governor.Other top Democrat legislators were also scarce as the Governor delivered his bleak news. House Democratic Leader, Delegate Ward Armstrong – a member of the House Finance Committee – did not attend Monday's meeting of the money committees; and Delegate Brian Moran, House Democrat Caucus Chairman (also a Finance Committee member), was absent as well. Senate Democratic Leader Dick Saslaw, a member of the Senate Finance Committee, was a no-show too. It would be nice if the Democrats attended the budget meetings to show their willingness to fix our fiscal situation. Yet, I guess we can consider the bright side of their absence: if they’re not in Richmond, they can’t raise our taxes. And now, Tim Kaine is getting ready to travel the nation as he runs for national office. While Virginians are looking for leadership from their Governor to work out or economic challenges, Kaine jumps ship. But then again, he left Richmond City government in shambles, and so I guess he’s getting ready to do the same in state government.Monday was very disappointing. Virginians expected their Governor to give them straight talk about our troubling fiscal situation, but instead we got an elusive tap dance from a politician angling for a promotion that he hasn't earned, and clearly isn’t qualified for.Read these statements from our legislative leaders:Lt. Since the time he shook up his organization a few weeks ago, he has been much more focused and has started to get through to voters. Democrats — and the press — didn’t like the quality of those ads, but they seem to have worked politically. His stand on drilling and on Russia have also strengthened his aura of command. And now Saddleback. … In short, the tide is moving for the first time in the Republican direction. He easily bested Democrat Barack Obama at Pastor Rick Warren's evangelical forum of presidential candidates Saturday night in California. Frederick, Chairman In this week's update:

Chairman's UpdateInflated Tires, Inflated EgosOkay, so has everyone finished inflating their tires? Great, because according to Barack Obama, we’ve just solved America’s energy crunch. And we didn’t even need to drill offshore to do it – something Obama adamantly opposes (I think… maybe not… has he announced yet today his current position? Maybe all this change he’s talking about is in his positions). As Obama said a few days ago, “we could save all the oil they’re talking about getting off of drilling, if everybody was just inflating their tires.” With any
luck, we can expect gas to be under $2.00/gallon just a little after lunchtime.
So, thank you Senator Obama for that innovative solution. Maybe now he can apply
the same insight and leadership on other issues – like healthcare. How about:
“take two aspirin, and call back us in the morning”? Why not? It makes about as
much sense as his energy plan. The fact is, this is sheer lunacy, and underscores a profound disregard for the facts on Obama’s part. According to government statistics, only a fraction of people at any given moment have improperly inflated tires. America consumes 20 million barrels of oil a day, and doing as Obama suggests would save oil in the tens of thousands of barrels, barely a blip. So gas prices will be unaffected and we’ll be just as dependent on foreign oil. Obama has apparently taken on the bold campaign strategy of writing off the votes of people able to think their way out of a wet paper bag. He hasn’t a clue on making us more energy independent or lowering gas prices for America’s families who are now hurting. But neither do most celebrities. After all, Obama is the biggest celebrity in the world (see latest McCain ad).Polls show that even 70% of the people from Obama’s own party support drilling for oil offshore now to make America more energy independent. Yet Obama and the Nancy Pelosi Democrats in Congress remain fanatical about blocking even a vote on lifting the moratorium on offshore drilling.Pelosi’s fanaticism came into plain view last week on the Sunday news program This Week, when asked why she wouldn’t allow a vote on drilling. Said Pelosi, “We are spending all of this time on a parliamentary tactic, when nothing less is at stake than the planet, the air we breathe, our children breathe. [sic]” She told The Politico on July 29th she opposed increasing oil supplies because she was “trying to save the planet.”The Democrats constantly promote themselves as the Party of regular people who will stand up for the “little guy.” And it seems to be true, so long as the “little guy” also happens
to be a Hollywood millionaire or a radical environmental lobbyist. But if you’re
a regular American, sick of paying through the nose just to get to work or drive
your kids to school, well obviously you don’t fit into their agenda of “saving
the planet.”Compare the Democrats’ approach to Senator John McCain and our
Republican Members of Congress. While the Democrats are on vacation, Republicans
stayed behind in Washington to demand action on energy. And it wasn’t for a bill
to inflate tires, it was for the only option that would help secure our economic
and national security: tapping American oil that is currently off-limits.Republicans have been hammering this issue at every opportunity, because when it comes right down to it, few other issues matter when our economy is shaking under the weight of foreign oil dependence. The result is that Virginia – and indeed America – is getting a clear view of which Party stands with them on basic quality of life issues that affect our future in America, and which party arrogantly grandstands but produces nothing to make our lives better. Polls show consistently that Senator McCain has closed the gap nationally – and in some key states – against Barack Obama. The bottom line,
as we approach the November elections, is that we have a lot to be encouraged
about, but we also must continue to hold the Democrats accountable – so Barack
Obama and Nancy Pelosi cannot continue to hold America’s future hostage on the
floors of the U.S. House and Senate. We know the other side is in love with air,
but we have something much better: the support of the majority of the people,
and the facts. Republicans this election have a real opportunity to change the
political landscape and help lead America into a future of true energy independence. The record is clear, and it’s the Republican Party that truly stands with the “little guy,” working families, and businesses to keep America safe, prosperous and strong.

Straight Talk Express in Richmond with Gov.
